Mushroom Mycelium – Nature’s Hidden Network
When we think of mushrooms, we picture the visible cap and stem. But beneath the surface lies the real powerhouse of the organism – the mycelium.
Mycelium is a vast, branching network of fine threads called hyphae. Much like the root system of a plant, it absorbs nutrients that help the fungus grow and thrive. The mushrooms we see – known as fruiting bodies – are the reproductive structures, designed to release spores and start the cycle again.
Do All Mushrooms Have Mycelium?
Yes. All mushrooms grow from mycelium, though not all fungi produce mushrooms. Mycelium feeds on organic matter, either by breaking down dead material or forming relationships with living plants.
Some types of mycelium even form partnerships with trees, helping them absorb water and nutrients more effectively. Scientists have found that these underground networks can connect entire forests, passing resources between plants in what’s sometimes called the “wood wide web.”
Beyond the Forest – Other Uses for Mycelium
Nature has already perfected mycelium’s role in ecosystems, but people are finding new ways to work with it.
-
Environmental cleanup – “Mycoremediation” uses fungi to help break down waste or contaminants in soil, water, and even air.
-
Sustainable materials – From mycelium-based leather alternatives used in shoes and accessories, to biodegradable packaging being trialled by major retailers.
-
Food innovation – Mycelium can be grown into meat-free protein sources with a texture and nutrient profile that appeals to many looking for alternatives.
Its potential spans from eco-friendly design to future farming.
Mycelium vs. Fruiting Body in Supplements
While mycelium is edible and contains nutrients, the fruiting body is generally richer in certain bioactive compounds – including naturally occurring beta-glucans. It’s also the only part exposed to light, allowing it to naturally develop Vitamin D precursors.
In supplement production, mycelium is often grown on grain or other substrates, with the final product containing both the mycelium and the growing medium. Fruiting bodies, in contrast, are harvested and extracted as pure mushroom material – often resulting in a more concentrated final supplement.
Why Grass & Co. Uses Only Fruiting Bodies
At Grass & Co., we choose to work exclusively with 100% fruiting bodies. Ours are organically grown on natural wood substrates in controlled greenhouses, then hot-water extracted to capture their full profile.
Whether you’re drawn to FOCUS (Lion’s Mane), POWER (Shiitake), or RELAX (Maitake), each blend is created to bring the highest quality mushroom fruiting bodies together with complementary botanicals, vitamins, and minerals – all in a vegan-friendly format that fits easily into daily life.
