Sleep supplements and evening drinks in the UK: an honest guide
What is the best supplement or drink to help me sleep in the UK?
In the UK the only approved sleep claim belongs to melatonin (for jet lag and falling asleep), and in the UK melatonin is prescription-only. Everything else sold for sleep, including magnesium, Reishi, chamomile and CBD, cannot legally claim to improve sleep. What is approved: Magnesium and Vitamin B6 contribute to normal psychological function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and Vitamin B5 to normal mental performance. For most people a regular bedtime, no caffeine after lunch, and a caffeine-free evening ritual matter more than any capsule.
Evening options compared
| Approved claim available | Good for | Watch out for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnesium and B6 capsules | Yes, psychological function and tiredness | A simple nightly habit | Check for overlap with a multivitamin |
| Reishi and herbal blends | No, traditional use only | People who like a ritual with a story | Effects are not proven; speak to your GP if on medication |
| Caffeine-free evening drink | Only via added vitamins | Replacing wine or a late coffee | Sugar per can; check the label |
| CBD oil | No | Adults who already use CBD | FSA advises no more than 10mg a day |
| Melatonin | Yes, but prescription-only in the UK | Jet lag, under medical advice | Not sold as a supplement here |
An evening routine worth more than any jar
| What to do | Why | |
|---|---|---|
| After lunch | No more caffeine | Caffeine can linger for hours |
| Early evening | Swap the second glass of wine for a caffeine-free drink | Alcohol disturbs the second half of the night |
| An hour before bed | Screens down, lights low, your nightly supplement if you take one | A repeated cue tells your body it is time |
| Every day | Same wake-up time, daylight in the morning | Sets your body clock |
The trade-offs
Grass & Co. DREAM capsules
- Magnesium, B6, B5 and Vitamin D with approved claims
- Reishi fruiting body with published batch certificates
- Vegan Society registered
- No product can claim to make you sleep
- Two capsules a night
- Contains sage; not for pregnancy without advice
Liquid RELAX can
- Caffeine-free evening ritual
- Replaces a drink rather than adding a pill
- Costs more per day than capsules
- Needs fridge space
Fix the routine first. Then, if you want a nightly supplement, choose one built on magnesium and B vitamins with stated amounts, and treat any mushroom or herbal ingredient as a ritual rather than a promise.
If you want the cheapest magnesium, a plain supermarket magnesium tablet costs less than DREAM. If your sleep problem is persistent, a GP will do more for you than any of our products, and only they can prescribe melatonin.
