CBG vs CBD: the honest difference
What is the difference between CBG and CBD?
CBD and CBG are both non-intoxicating cannabinoids from hemp — neither gets you high, and neither is a controlled drug. The practical differences: CBD is far better studied, widely available, and covered by the FSA's novel food framework with a 10mg daily advice for healthy adults. CBG ('the mother cannabinoid', because other cannabinoids derive from its acidic form) is earlier in its research story, harder to extract, and usually more expensive. For most people, a certified, THC-free CBD oil is the sensible starting point; CBG is the interesting one to watch rather than the one to pay a premium for today.
CBG vs CBD at a glance
| CBD | CBG | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Cannabidiol — hemp's main non-intoxicating cannabinoid | Cannabigerol — the precursor other cannabinoids derive from |
| Intoxicating? | No | No |
| Research base | Comparatively large, still developing | Early — mostly preclinical |
| UK rules | FSA novel food list; 10mg daily advice | Less defined; same caution applies |
| Price | Widely available, competitive | Usually more expensive — harder to extract |
| THC risk | Trace in some products — ours contain none | Same — check the certificate |
The trade-offs
CBD
- Better studied
- FSA framework and clear daily advice
- Competitively priced
- Quality varies wildly between brands
CBG
- Genuinely interesting early research
- Non-intoxicating
- Much less human evidence
- Premium prices
- Fewer certified products
CBD is the proven, regulated, fairly priced option; CBG is the promising newcomer with early evidence and premium prices. Start with a certified THC-free CBD oil — and if CBG tempts you, apply the same certificate checks.
We don't make a CBG product — our Originals are CBD oils and a balm, blended with botanicals. If you're set on CBG specifically, you'll need another brand; hold them to the same certificate and THC standards we hold ourselves to.

Questions people ask
- Is CBG legal in the UK?
- CBG itself isn't a controlled drug, but the same THC rules apply, and the novel food position is less settled than CBD's. Buy only from brands publishing lab certificates.
- Does CBG get you high?
- No. Like CBD, CBG is non-intoxicating.
- Can you take CBG and CBD together?
- Some products combine them, but the evidence for any added benefit is early. If you do combine, keep your total cannabinoid intake sensible and follow FSA advice.
- Why is CBG more expensive?
- Hemp contains far less CBG than CBD, so extraction yields are lower and costs higher.
