Mushroom powder: what to check, and how to use it

What should I look for in a mushroom powder?

    The short answer

A functional mushroom powder is dried, usually extracted, mushroom you stir into food or drink. The useful questions are which mushroom (Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga and so on), whether it is fruiting body or mycelium grown on grain, how much is in a serving, and whether batch tests are published. Blends spread a small dose across many mushrooms, so check each amount. Grass & Co. FOCUS powder is Lion's Mane-led: 2,000mg fruiting-body material per 2g serving, tested at 30% beta-glucans.

    The trade-offs

    Single-mushroom powder (e.g. FOCUS powder)

    • A meaningful dose of one mushroom
    • Easy to know what you are taking
    • Only one mushroom tradition covered

    Multi-mushroom blend powders

    • Several mushrooms in one scoop
    • Each dose is often tiny
    • Harder to tell what is doing anything
    The verdict

Choose the mushroom for the job, then a powder that states its dose and part used. A focused dose of one mushroom usually beats a token amount of ten.

    Where Grass & Co. loses

We only sell one powder, and it is Lion's Mane-led. If you want Reishi, Chaga or Cordyceps in powder form, another brand wins — our Reishi and Cordyceps come as capsules and cans.

    Questions people ask

What does mushroom powder taste like?
Earthy and slightly savoury. Coffee, cacao and smoothies hide it well.
Is mushroom powder the same as eating mushrooms?
No. Functional powders are usually extracts concentrated from specific species, not culinary mushrooms ground up.
    Which mushroom powder is best?
The one matched to what you want, with a stated dose and published testing. For focus routines, Lion's Mane is the usual pick.
